Passing Time: Casual Games for Hitchhikers

07: Treasure Hunt

Pick a historic hitchhiker. This could be Princess Kasune, Kinga Freespirit, or someone you met yesterday.

Create a treasure hunt about them for a future explorer to follow. Each point on your map should pay tribute to an issue that person brought to light, or a key moment in their life.

Your installation must create as little damage as possible: a poem in a hollow in the woods is acceptable, carving words into the bark of a tree is not. The “quality” is not for you to pass judgment on, it is the remembering that is important.

Send a map to the hitchhiking museum in Slovenia, the local youth club and a person of your choice.

Points will find you when you least expect them.

31: Fortunately, Unfortunately

Set up camp in an unlikely place. You may have stopped hitchhiking early (see Risk) or are simply ready for a break.

If at first you perceive the place as ugly, look for details in the cracks of things: moss fringing concrete and flowers craning their necks towards the light.

Clean the space of rubbish, as if you are ushering folk into a music hall. Then entertain your pioneers for the evening.

Ask your audience what used to live here before the paving, then act out what it will look like in a hundred years. Be as quiet as possible.

Gender-neutral pronouns are encouraged.

42: Mortality

Every time someone tells you that you are going to die while hitchhiking, take the opportunity to make up a new creation myth.

Afterwards, write these down and tuck them behind salt shakers in cafes for others to find.
